Kadalmallai divyadesam

Is the current Sthalasayana perumal koil at Mahabalipuram the temple Thirumangai Azhwar refers to as Kadalmallai in Periya Thirumozhi? This is because all the architecture in the Sthalasayana perumal temple indicates Vijayanagara construction post 14th century. Can Kadalmallai be one of the shore temples swallowed by the ocean or the existing shore temple where Perumal is seen without Adisesha. The shore temple is an ancient one that would have existed during Azhwar's time. Also note that Thiruvidanthai the closest divyadesam to Mahabalipuram has a clear Pallava architecture.

  1. The kadarkarai koil (Kadalmallai that azhwars sang pasurams for) is on the current beach and being preserved by the Archaeological Society of India. You're correct that the current Sthala Sayana Perumal temple was built more recently, only 600 years ago.

  2. Actually there is a point made by historians that during sangam age there were many vishnu temples here , destroyed by sea erosion . Pallavas rebuilt them but they too were washed away by the sea what we see is remains of them.
